Krim was also a founding member of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting AIDS research, education, and advocacy.

Early Life and Education:

  • Born in Italy in 1926 to Jewish parents, Krim fled with her family to Switzerland to escape the rise of fascism. They later immigrated to the United States in the late 1940s.

1. Research on HIV/AIDS:

  • Krim became deeply involved in the emerging AIDS crisis in the 1980s, when the disease was ravaging communities around the world, particularly in the gay community and among intravenous drug users.

  • Her research helped to increase understanding of the virus that causes AIDS and its effects on the immune system. She played a pivotal role in highlighting the importance of scientific research in combating the epidemic.

2. Founding of amfAR:

  • In 1985, Krim co-founded amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research), an organization that became one of the world’s leading nonprofits dedicated to AIDS research. Under her leadership, amfAR helped raise millions of dollars for research and education on HIV/AIDS.

  • The foundation's contributions to finding therapies for HIV and promoting education about the virus helped change the landscape of the global fight against AIDS.

3. Advocacy and Education:

  • Beyond her research, Krim was a fierce advocate for AIDS awareness and education, particularly in breaking the stigma surrounding the disease. She worked to educate the public about HIV transmission, prevention, and treatment.

  • She was instrumental in raising awareness within the medical community about the urgency of addressing HIV/AIDS through scientific inquiry, community outreach, and political advocacy.

  • "We will continue to work to ensure that AIDS is not a death sentence, and that treatment and education are available to all."

Significance:

Mathilde Krim's legacy lies not only in her scientific contributions but also in her tireless advocacy for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Her efforts helped shape global AIDS policy and foster a sense of urgency within the scientific and medical communities to develop treatments and cures for HIV. Through amfAR, Krim left an indelible mark on the world, and her work continues to inspire those dedicated to advancing medical research, education, and social justice.
