Rita Levi-Montalcini




Rita Levi-Montalcini (April 22, 1909 – December 30, 2012) was an Italian neurologist and one of the most prominent scientists of the 20th century. She is celebrated for her groundbreaking discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein critical to the development and maintenance of the nervous system. Her work earned her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986, shared with her collaborator Stanley Cohen.
